I saw this really cool picture of "Fairies in a Jar" and just had to try making one.

I have to say this much, the instructions from this site left a lot to be desired! LOL Two tries, and got nowhere the look of this picture. So I started looking around and find that other people had the same results as me. There was even some comments of photoshopping on the pictures. Take a look at the other pins in this board. The other pins are the results of my "looking around." I think I'd go LED.

These two sites are the only ones I found with really good instructions on how to make these glow jars. This is where I found out that you don't use water! As to why I added water, the instructions from my first inspiration site was pretty skimpy, just 3 lines on how to make it. I was reading the comments below them that someone mentioned water.  Needless to say, the first couple of tries were complete and abject failures.

This time, armed with the knowledge that you DON'T ADD WATER, I tried again and followed the instructions from the thegoldjellybean.com and wikihow.com The results are better and since there is no water added, they both glowed. The sparkling you see in the top picture did not show up as well in these jars. Maybe the light has to hit them in the right angle? The glass jar on the right is a quart size and 4 4" sticks is not enough in my opinion. Maybe I need to go back and look at the instructions again. I do think pint sized jar or just a little smaller would work better with 4 4" sticks, the fatter the better. I used the thin glow sticks from the dollar store. The one on the right was a peanut butter plastic jar about pint size. The glitter showed up a little bit better than the yellow one, maybe because there were a little more liquid in this one. By the way, I wouldn't recommend empty peanut butter plastic jars for this since the one I used leaked badly due to no seal. It was pretty neat watching the glowing trail left behind when carrying the jar.

These pictures were taken as is and put together in Photoshop. The only tinkering done to them was sharpening and resizing for this blog. The left one was taken at dusk and the right one was taken about couple of hours later. The left one was a mix of yellow and orange glow sticks. The right one was mostly translucent opal/white liquid that came from a red/white/blue stick.

Thanks for stopping by.
